We Love Corrections

SARATOGIAN

“I heard from a couple people about my Beach Boys column a few weeks ago. Apparently I screwed up royally on the name of the song I was writing about.

The jest of the column was that I couldn't make the connection about surfing and going on a safari in one of the Boys' classic songs 'Surfin' Safari.' But I didn't call it that. I called the song 'Surfin U.S.A.,' which is part of the chorus and, logically to me, the song title.

Purists weren't amused that I missed the title. But that was the least of it.

I suggested that the Boys must be singing 'come on a 'surfari' with me,' not 'safari.' Even though the Boys' lyrics are crystal clear compared to most popular music groups, I took 'Surfin Safari' as one of those songs we listened to and couldn't quite make out the words, so we made up lyrics we thought fit.

Remember 'Louie, Louie'? Like that, only nicer.

And so I stand corrected.

But I still think 'surfari' makes more sense.” -- Jill Wing
